Tia Chan aka “Chen Tiya” @tiachan88 –
1. Tia is a Chinese Canadian goaltender hailing from Hamilton, Ontario. She began playing hockey at the age of 4 and played boys’ minor hockey until she turned 8. Growing up in Ontario, she was also an accomplished track and field and javelin athlete.
2. Tia played juniors in the PWHL, where she was dominant. Tending net for the @burlingtonbarracudas, she posted save percentages of .939, .940, and .949, and recorded GAAs of 1.78, 1.66, and 1.40 from 2017-2020.
3. Tia also received the rare honor of being anointed as an alternate captain for the Barracudas as a goalie in 2019-20, where she enjoyed her best season with a 14-8-3 record.
4. Tia then suited up for the @uconnwhoc in 2020-21. As a freshman, she recorded a 4-5-1 record with a 1.49 GAA and .947 save percentage. Her success led to a Hockey East All-Rookie Team designation.
5. This past season, Tia took time off from the Huskies to represent China. First, she played for the @kunlunredstar as a heritage player in 2021-22, where she posted a 6-2 record with a stellar 1.21 GAA and .945 save percentage. Tia then lived the dream by competing in the @olympics for China at the young age of 19. She suited up for one game against Czechia, making 33 saves in a 0-3 loss. Tia continued to represent China at the recent @iihfhockey D1B Women’s World Championships, where she was instrumental in securing a Gold medal with a 5-0 record. She was also recognized for posting the top GAA (1.93) in the tournament.
Tia will return to the Huskies in pursuit of her academic development, and I wish her the best in her future college and international ambitions!
