This is probably my favorite card now because of its uniqueness (only 10 made). It cost me $90 USD (not a big deal...) but it was well worth it! I didn’t realize this official KHL issued card was sealed, and I love the fact that @zyuen_93 signed it in Hanzi (Chinese characters)!
Prior post: Here’s another guy I’ve been closely following since he was drafted, Zach Yuen @zyuen_93 -
1. Zach is a Chinese Canadian defenseman from Vancouver. His dad is from Hong Kong and his mom is from Guangdong Province.
2. He had 5 successful seasons in the WHL with the @tcamericans, accumulating 118 points in 255 games.
3. Zach’s great play in the WHL led to him being drafted as the 119th pick by the @nhljets in 2011. He was the first defenseman of Chinese descent to be drafted by an NHL team.
4. In 2016, Zach signed with the @krschina, where he is a fan favorite (he was featured in the Chinese GQ magazine and was the source for an action figure) and was the first player of Chinese descent to score a goal for the @krschina.
5. As told by @byipper on the @spittinchiclets podcast, there are only two players who legendary coach Mike Keenan claims have ever fired back at him: Brett Hull and Zach Yuen.
Zach is cognizant of the importance of his background for Asian hockey youth, as he’s been quoted as saying: “Hopefully I can inspire more Chinese Canadians to pursue hockey, and be a good role model for them.” I can’t wait to see this guy on the world stage in 2022.
