Here’s another So Cal guy that lit me up in beer league, Darren Nowick -
1. Darren was a speedy and physical Japanese American forward from Long Beach, California. His older brother, Dustin (@dnowick), was tough as nails and also played at a high level (and I’m still trying to find his official card).
2. After playing for the Junior Kings organization, Darren joined the @vernonvipersbchl of the @bchockeyleague in 2010, where he won a league championship and a Doyle Cup as a rookie recording 27 points in 59 games. In 2011-12, he finished 2nd in team scoring with 59 points in 50 games.
3. Darren then spent 4 years at @northernmichiganu; he notched 75 points in 140 @ncaaicehockey games.
4. After college, Darren’s North American pro career was spent between the @echlhockey and @theahl for the @missourimaverickschl, @kcmavericks, @ahlheat, and @ahlislanders.
5. In 2018, Darren went overseas to Sweden, where he played 3 seasons. He last played for @skellefteaaik of the @shlofficial in 2020-21, tallying 11 points and 99 PIMs in 49 games. He has since retired from competitive hockey.
Additional fun fact: How did I know Darren was part Japanese? Dustin, who I played with for a few years, revealed his ancestry to me over beers after one of our games! He had to show me his driver’s license to prove it!
